How Dogs Learn, A Guide To Canine Training

You had dreams of your dog being as smart and kind as Benji, but sometimes it feels as if he is more like a hell-hound. There is hope! You can train aggressive or naughty behaviors out of your dog.

Crate train your puppy in small steps, so that the training is most effective. First, put them inside with the door still open. When they get used to that, close the gate and give them a treat they like. Gradually increase the amount of time your dog spends in the crate, starting with just a few seconds. If the dog doesn't like it, slow the process.

You need to adhere to a specific feeding routine for your dog. Feed your dog at the same times every day, so that he knows what to expect. Your dog will learn to eat in a few minutes instead of going back to the food bowl all day long.

A dog needs a healthy diet as much as a dog owner does. If your dog isn't getting what he needs from his diet, he will have a hard time concentrating during training. Without proper nutrition, your dog's general health will suffer and there may also be direct effects on behavior. Providing a dog with fresh water and a high protein diet can have an astounding affect on their health and attitude.

With the right encouragement, most dogs can learn to roll over pretty quickly. The first step is a simple “lay” command. Next, you must hold one treat close to the floor off to one side of their head and slowly bring it up and over the dog's head to the opposite side. They should follow that treat with their nose, which should cause them to roll over. While rolling, use your vocal command. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.

Patience is the greatest virtue in dog training. This will keep you and your puppy from becoming frustrated or angry. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.

Teaching a new puppy to “leave it” is very important and one of the first commands that you should work on. You can use this command for a number of purposes. For example, it is used to prevent the dog from chewing on something or even to guide them out of harm's way.

Primary Reinforcement

Utilize primary reinforcement when training your furry friend. Primary reinforcement is a positive reinforcement training strategy that relies heavily on things your dog already enjoys. Primary reinforcement could be treats or giving your dog a belly rub. This lets your dog know how to earn something it wants.

Most people are surprised how quickly their dog can learn from training and how fast they get results. Therefore, should you start to feel frustration with your dog, put some of the following advice to work.
