Tips To Help You When Training Your Dog

While many people would like to train their pets, they think it is something hard to do. It might be because you weren't taught how. The key that you need to remember when training your dog is that you need to learn how to properly administer training. There are some training tips in this article that might be useful to you.

Reprimands should be delivered quickly and in a sharp tone. It's not good to rant about how bad your dog is. Just say no, then let them know what behavior you want to see. Be sure your command tone of voice gets their attention and shows that you're serious.

Timing is of the utmost importance when it comes to training your dog, so make sure you spend lots of time training, but don't overdo it. Begin with a training session that lasts a few minutes, and do it for a bit longer every day. Pay attention and end the session when your dog loses interest.

Ensure that the mood is calm as you approach your dog. Play time is beneficial to your dog, however, you need to teach your dog to be calm as you enter any room. Don't acknowledge your dog until you decide. This will establish a controlled atmosphere.

Give them chew toys for pain relief while teething, and keep everything else out of reach. Give it an actual chew toy in its place. If your puppy seems to be suffering a lot from teething, a frozen washcloth to chew on can give him some relief.

Dogs have great focus and can focus on one thing, ignoring everything else, until something breaks their attention. If you are consistent and use repetition, your dog will start to wait for your signals before focusing on something.

Training your dog to start rolling over is easy, but be sure to have some treats. The first step is to teach your dog to lay. Then, hold the treat over your dog's head and swipe it above and around his head, causing him to roll over. Ideally, your dog will use his nose to follow the treat, rolling his whole body in the process. While he rolls, say “roll over” and repeat this action until he is able to roll over with only the command. It may take a while to get to this point, but you will be pleased if you stick with it. It's an impressive trick.

To house train your pup, get him on a set feeding and potty schedule every day. By establishing a regular potty-time every day, you will get your dog in the habit of doing his business at the same time daily. A regular schedule will also give your dog a chance to learn how to exercise self-control, as he will know that a trip outside is eminent.

Use primary reinforcement to train your dog. This utilizes something the dog loves as a means to reward positive behaviors. This can be a belly rub, a favorite toy or a tasty treat. This will enable your dog to learn how to obtain something it is interested in having.

With any luck, these tips should help you feel much more confident when training your dog. Keep in mind that you can always learn something new about puppy training, so never stop learning and applying what you learn.
