Training your dog can feel overwhelming if you haven't attempted it before. There is a lot of information out there and sorting through it all can seem difficult. Here are some tips to get you started.

Proper and generous rewards are critical to training your dog. You must always provide treats in a wise and timely fashion. If you don't do it at the correct time, the dog may become confused about the reward.

Try to see things from your dog's perspective. Frustration is easy during puppy training. Instead of being frustrated, try to think like your dog. This allows you to gain more insight into what is most likely to work and what should be avoided.

Feed your dog a healthy diet. A bad diet can cause your dog many problems. Without proper nutrition, your dog can suffer both physically and behaviorally. Simply enhancing a dog's diet can make a big difference in its receptiveness to training.

If you have to keep your dogs outside, never tie them up too close to one another. The dogs chains could get tangled up and cause harm to the dogs as they struggle to get free. If a large dog becomes tangled with a smaller one they could wrap up to the point the airway of the latter is closed off and the dog would die.

The rule of thumb with puppies and house training is to remember: what is eaten will pass. To keep your pet regular, feed him quality food a couple of times daily at the same hour. Doing so allows you to gain a clearer picture of when your puppy might need to relieve himself outdoors.

If you plan to incorporate a crate in puppy training, choose one that corresponds to the size of your dog. Remember, puppies grow up. Choose a crate which will be the right size for the dog when he grows up. They have to be comfortable moving around inside to ensure they aren't crowded.

It's important to avoid inadvertently encouraging inappropriate behavior if you want your dog to learn. Avoid giving them any rewards they haven't earned. If you wish to keep your dog from begging for table scraps, don't encourage him by slipping him a morsel one night or allowing others to do so.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Remember to show your dog positive attention when they do something good as often as you can. Don't ever hit your dog or yell at them! Doing this will cause your dog to act out even more and lose respect for you. Maintain a calm attitude anytime that your dog does wrong so that you can have a relationship o mutual respect with your dog.

By being consistent in your methods, it is possible to teach your dog to “hold it.” If at home, be sure to spend some time with him and bring him outside every 50 minutes. Every time your dog potties outside, be quick to praise him. If you dog has an accident inside your house, do not scold him. He does not know better, and shouting at him will only make things worse. It's better to teach your dog to expect to potty outside by taking him out a few minutes after meals or after being crated.
