Need Help Training Your Dog? Here Are Some Tips!

If you have a dog that is poorly behaved, learning more about canine training can really help your dog become more obedient. Here are some great tips to start you out on the right foot.

Consider things from your dog's perspective. A lot of owners get frustrated when their dog is not understanding a basic command. Instead of completely giving up, consider looking at it from their perspective. This allows you to gain more insight into what is most likely to work and what should be avoided.

When tying up your dog, make sure it is not close to another chained dog. It is possible for the chains to become intertwined, and the animals can be hurt as they try to get free. It can even be fatal if you tie a large dog up with a small dog, and the large dog ends up getting a chain wrapped around the small dog's neck.

Shock Collars

Refrain from using shock collars and similar training devices. These devices are expensive and do not always work as well as you would expect them to. In addition, shock collars and some similar items can actually discourage your dog from practicing good behavior. These tools often do more harm than good.

If you encounter a dog with whom you are not acquainted, you should do so slowly and with the back of a hand outstretched. This gives the dog an opportunity to learn your scent. After he knows you and your scent, it is easier to command him.

Accidents must be avoided during potty training. Try to recognize your dog's body language and anticipate his need to go out. Pacing, sniffing and whining are common signs. When you notice this, do not delay. Head outdoors to the assigned potty spot right away. Praise him for appropriate toileting. Eventually, he will learn to ask to go out.

Stop Barking

Train your dog to stop barking with a treat. As the dog begins barking, display a treat and then repeat your order until the barking ceases. Only give them the treat when they obey the command. Eventually they will stop barking altogether as a result of the positive association.

If you travel with your dogs, pack your dog's needs for sleep, toileting and sleeping. Water, bowls, bathroom bags and paper towels are good things to have to help everything run smoothly. Don't worry too much about food though. You can buy it there.

It might be hard but you have to be patient when you are training your dog. Your dog is not human and doesn't know English. He will pick up on gestures and tones you give off rather than what you are actually saying. Stay calm, step back and take a breather when you become frustrated.

You should be constantly challenging your dog and re-teaching it the tricks you've previously taught it. Test what he knows by giving commands, even if you are sure that he has the skill mastered.

Dogs will be dogs, so give your dog outlets to work out his canine behaviors. Dogs need a healthy diet, a place where they can run, and items to keep them occupied.

As the tips above show, your puppy training will really pay off when your dog is behaving the way that you would like. After you begin using what you have learned, you will find your dog responding to you more positively.
