A Well-Trained Dog Equals A Happy Household

A dog is part of the family, so it's okay to only use positive reinforcement. This article will give you some helpful tips for successfully training your dog. The more you are willing to learn about training your pet, the better your results will be.

Take small steps when crate training your dog. Once your dog is accustomed to being in the crate, try closing the door and giving your pet a treat through the wire. Start small, like at 10 seconds per approach, and then gradually increase the times. If your puppy starts acting distressed about going into the create, you need to slow things down.

Positive reinforcement is important when training your dog. It is essential that your dog get treats at the proper times and in the correct amounts. Dogs can get confused if they are rewarded at inappropriate times.

Dogs have great focus and can focus on one thing, ignoring everything else, until something breaks their attention. Once your dog knows his attention command, you will be able to coerce him to ignore almost anything.

The first thing that you must do is to command control over your dog. You must establish your dominance first and foremost, or your dog is unlikely to obey. Avoid allowing your dog to lead you during walks. Instead, walk in front of your dog to show that you are the leader of this pack.

As your dog becomes better when it comes to training your dog, you can start giving it more freedom. Maintaining a proper balance between obeying your commands and having some freedom will lead to a happier dog. Don't give too much at any one time, of course, or it could take your training back a step.

Dogs need routine, so feed your dog at the same time every day. This also helps with training. This gives both you and the dog a heads up as to when they need to go outside, and you can make sure that happens before they make a mess indoors. This will also teach your dog “hold it” until her next trip outside.

Continue training your dog using the same techniques over time. If there are several family members involved in training a dog, ensure each person uses the same techniques and commands. It will be easier for the dog if he or she learns only one particular command set and becomes accustomed to the response the behavior receives.

You should now feel a little more competent and comfortable in your role as a dog trainer. Choosing to follow some of the advice and tips in this article, will not only make you a better trainer, but a better listener, who can understand the needs of your dog. A little advice goes a long way!
