It is common for people to adopt a puppy or dog without thinking of the consequences. You have to be totally committed if you want to own a dog. It takes a while for a dog to get comfortable in a crate. Don't take it too fast; introduce the dog at his own pace. When they seem comfortable in it with the door open, try shutting the gate and feed them treats through the wires. Leave them in for short periods of time, as little as 10 seconds. Use your dog's name as much as you can to make sure he is paying attention. Use it as often as possible when you have your puppy during the first weeks, the puppy will make the connection. It's best to stick with shorter names, one's that are distinguishable from other words.

You can rest assured that when you train your puppy, they may have an accident in the house. Immediately clean up every accident for training purposes. Animals are inclined to eliminate repeatedly in spots where they can smell urine or feces, and carpets require special care. There are a wide variety of odor control products designed to address just this situation, so head to the pet shop and ask about them.

An effective way to train your dog is to use different voice tones for different purposes. Your dog should be able to distinguish between varying tones you use for praise, commands and corrections. Use a sharp and firm tone for commands and a loud tone to correct his behaviors, saving the natural tone for praises.

To avoid making your pet overweight, watch the number of treats you hand out in a day. To keep your dog healthy, you really need to monitor their treat intake. It's an aspect often overlooked.

No matter how long you have owned your dog, you can always train them. However, you should act as soon as you can before your dog harms others due to ignorance.
