Many dogs are sentenced to a life in a shelter when things get too stressful at home. This is avoidable in most cases. A well trained dog can become a happy, healthy, and well adjusted member of the family. As long as you are willing to put the time in, training your dog can be an easy and fun process.
You need to establish predictable feeding practices with any dog. Training your dog to expect that when fed, once or twice a day, you will be removing the food bowl in 10-15 minutes, will lay down a feeding schedule that your dog will adhere to. Soon your dog will be finished with the meal before you are ready to remove the dish.
Unless you offer a distraction or stimulus, your dog will probably focus exclusively on a single thing. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.
Dogs should never be tied up close to each other. The leashes or chains can become intertwined, causing harm to one or more of the dogs. If dogs get tangled up too severely, one can get wrapped up so badly it could close off the airway, and he could die.
Select an appropriately sized crate to foster solid crate training results. Don't forget, your puppy will grow. Get a crate that is the right size for your dog when it gets older. There should be enough space to move around without feeling cramped.
Let your dog have more freedom as he or she starts to behave and listen to commands more. You will find your dog to be more obedient and your dog will be happier. Do not allow them freedom all at once, they might lose what they learned.
Always be ready with dog treats. You want to make sure that your dog understands that he has accomplished a good thing. Doing so makes your dog learn what he can and can't do.
If your canine jumps on top of you, gently grab their paws and squeeze them; this will tell them that they cannot jump. This won't hurt your dog, but it will give them an uncomfortable feeling that will help teach them not to do it again. After some time, they won't jump on anyone because they'll associate it with being made to feel uncomfortable.
As it was stated previously, having a well-behaved and happy dog in your family is very possible. All that your dog needs is good training, the right amount of attention, and plenty of support and love from you. Follow the steps listed above and your dog will become, and remain, an important part of your family.
