Disobedient Dog? Training Tips That May Help

The reasons for owning a dog are various. Maybe it was the cute puppy with the longing eyes! Needless to say, an obedient pet is ideal. You need to train your dog if you want him to be this way. The piece that follows offers great tips to achieve those ends.

Generous rewards are a key part of training. Quantity and timing are important when it comes to rewards. A dog quickly forgets his actions, so you must reward him immediately to reinforce his behaviors.

Make sure you feed your dog healthy food. A poor diet is bad for your dog on several levels. Not only is this bad for their health, but it can influence their behavior towards you and their environment. With the right healthy diet, your dog will be more energetic and eager to please during training sessions.

Chew Toys

Make sure that the only items your dog can reach are chew toys that are specifically made for dogs. Immediately replace it with one of his designated chew toys. If the puppy is suffering any pain from teething, freeze a wet washcloth for him or her to chew on.

Repeat training exercises every day until your dog remembers them. It is easy to feel that once your dog's training is over, the lessons are learned and will stay with the dog forever. That's not a good idea, since animals and humans form and retain habits in a similar way. This shows that you need to do periodic refreshers so that your dog continues to follow the rules.

Once your pet is able to progress through training sessions, you'll be able to loosen the reins somewhat. By having obedience along with freedom, your dog will have a happy life. Like most things, too much freedom can be counterproductive, so exercise caution with certain liberties.

When giving commands to your body, your tone and volume level should remain the same. This lets the dog know you are serious. You should also work on developing different tones to use in different situations. For example, you can have a sharp one for disciplinary purposes, and a firm, but not-as-sharp one for simple commands.

Make sure a reward is always handy for whenever the dog does what you want. You want to make sure that your dog understands that he has accomplished a good thing. You will ensure that your dog knows how to tell right from wrong if you do this.

Don't approach a strange dog too quickly. Hold our your hand and slowly move closer. This gives a dog a chance to become familiar with your personal scent, which engenders trust. After your dog gets your scent, it will no longer fear you and will follow commands better.

Dogs need routine, so feed your dog at the same time every day. This also helps with training. This will give you an idea of when the dog is likely to have to go, so you can take it outdoors to take care of this matter before an accident occurs on your rug. This will also teach your dog “hold it” until her next trip outside.

Ready to begin? Hopefully now the idea of training your dog seems a lot more doable. It is a joy to earn a well-trained pet. It takes time to do just that! But, the work is well worth it. Especially when you are spending time with your happy, well-behaved companion. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to put these great tips into action.
