Every dog needs to be trained to behave how you would have it behave. They already have the correct abilities, but they aren't synced correctly out of the box. Your canine buddy is already equipped with the intelligence he needs to be well-trained. He just needs a masterful hand to show him the ropes.
It takes small steps to crate train your puppy; they must become accustomed to it. Once your puppy feels comfortable in the open crate, close the door and offer the dog a treat. At first, only close the gate for a short time, then gradually extend the time as your dog becomes more comfortable. If the dog doesn't like it, slow the process.
Stay in control as you reward your dog's good behavior. You and the dog should both remain calm. You might be happy about the progress your dog has made but you need to quell your excitment. Stay calm and bestow rewards calmly too.
A dog needs a healthy diet as much as a dog owner does. An unhealthy diet can have several negative effects on your dog. Without proper nutrition, your dog can suffer both physically and behaviorally. Sometimes, it is possible to improve your pet's behavior and cooperation simply by improving the quality of his or her diet.
Try not to reinforce bad behavior in your dog by accident. This means you must not reward your dog with attention or treats for doing something you don't want it to do. You should not pet your dog when it jumps on you or acknowledge its barking.
When you start canine training, come up with a verbal cue that will tell your pet they've followed your command. One good word can act as an appreciated segue from the good behavior to the ultimate reward.
Understand that getting your dog to respond during the times that you tell him or her ‘no' is not helpful. Find some positive ways to enforce training when you train your dog. If you just say “no”, your dog might not understand what is acceptable. Each dog has their own quirks.
Try to keep accidents at a minimum when toilet training your dog. Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. Pacing back and forth, snuffing and whining are some common signs. When you notice this, do not delay. Put your dog on a leash and take him where he should go. Praise him for a job well done. Soon, your dog will signal you when he needs to go outside.
Desensitize your dog to the cause of their barking in order to reduce the behavior. Whether your dog barks in response to other dogs, people, certain sounds or something else, it is important to habituate him to this circumstance. Once the dog is acclimated, he'll begin to see there is not reason to bark.
Do not wear out your new puppy with an excessive training regiment. A puppy only has short bursts of energy and doesn't have a long attention; you've got to keep your training sessions positive and short. He'll likely forget everything you taught him if you do too much at once. He will also look at training as a negative experience and it will be harder next time.
Once someone knows how to train their dog, all they need to do is practice. Dogs love any opportunity to impress their owners, and owners always enjoy the pride that comes with training the animal successfully.
