It is not wise to think that your dog has the same intelligence as you, they are dogs and do not possess the ability to think like we do. If you put this expectation on your animal, you will only wind up disappointed and frustrated. Dogs are smart animals, though, and with a little patience and understanding they can be well trained.

Correcting a dog should be done quickly and concisely. Do not rant on at length to your dog telling them how they were bad. Just say no, then show it what to do instead. The tone of your voice should let them know you are serious about the command you are making.

Giving your dog proper treats is the best way to train. Treats, toys and praise have to be given in the right doses and at the correct times. It can create confusion for dogs if rewards are sporadic and not administered at the correct times.

Make training for your dog a regular, repeated part of your time together to keep them familiar with the rules they've learned. A lot of owners will train their dogs once and not conduct any refreshers. Pets are just like humans, in that they follow habitual routines. Your dog must follow the rule system strictly.

Make a point to enjoy your time with your dog while you are training. By playing games with your dog, a strong bond will develop between the two of you, which helps the dog respond in a positive manner during training. Training may be a fun activity, but it's also good to enjoy your time with your dog.

Your dog must learn that there is no need for it to respond to your utterance of the word ‘no.' Training must be a positive experience for your dog. Saying the word “no” will not aid in the training of your dog. Not all dogs are the same, and their training needs will vary.

Canine training involves a firm hand. That said, love should prevail and yelling should never occur. This way you will develop a strong bond with your dog.

Use your dog's name as many times as you can, this will keep his attention on you. Over time and repetition, the dog will begin to understand their name and that they are being spoken to. Keep the name brief, and make sure that it does not sound too similar to other commonly used words.
