If you are attempting to crate train your dog, remember that it is a multi-step process. As soon as they start to feel comfortable in the crate when the door is open, try closing the gate and have them eat inside. At first, only close the gate for a short time, then gradually extend the time as your dog becomes more comfortable. If they become upset, you are moving too fast.

Make sure that your dog stays in a relaxed area. Play time is beneficial to your dog, however, you need to teach your dog to be calm as you enter any room. When you ignore the dog on entry, they shouldn't bother you about playing.

When using a crate to train your dog, you'll want to make sure that you select the right size. Don't forget that puppies get bigger. Choose a large enough crate to offer extra space beyond your dog's dimensions. The dog will need sufficient room to rest and turn around without feeling cramped.

Give your dog a clear verbal cue that means “yes” to aid in training. Words like “yes” could be an effective way of communicating to your dog that he has done something you are pleased about.

Hold a treat between your forefingers near the left side of your dog's head, and then slowly pass the treat in front of his face and to the opposite side. His nose will track that treat and his body will roll over. As he rolls over say out loud, “roll over.” Repeat this until he rolls over with the command alone. It may take a while to get to this point, but you will be pleased if you stick with it. It's an impressive trick.

Pay attention to the length of your dog training sessions. Devoting strict amounts of time to any particular aspect of training will have your dog feeling distracted and bored. Try to keep the initial sessions limited to about 10 minutes.
