How To Show Your Dog Who’s Boss

Although you may care for your things, your dog may not feel the same way. Regrettably, your dog probably does not share the same appreciation and respect for material possessions of yours that you do, seeing everything instead as a chew toy. This article will give you advice on how to prevent your dog from chewing on things.

When crate training an indoor dog or puppy, you may try some tricks. If the dog doesn't want to go inside the crate, put a rawhide bone in there and shut the door. Your dog will want the bone and will be unable to resist entering the crate. If they do go into the crate, offer up praise and a treat.

When training your dog, try to avoid reinforcing negative behavior. In basic terms, this means refusing to reward your dog, via attention or treats, for doing any action that you are trying to get them to stop doing. If the dog jumps at you, don't rub it's head.

When training, find a verbal clue your pet can understand so they will know exactly when to do as you say. One good word can act as an appreciated segue from the good behavior to the ultimate reward.

Have a good treat ready for your dog when it completes something that you ask. Your dog should realize why you are happy with him. Rewarding good behavior and not bad behavior will help your dog to learn the difference between the two.

When house training your pup, you should adhere to a regular schedule of feeding and elimination. This will help you better understand when your dog needs to go outside, so he doesn't go on the carpet and ruin it. Following a schedule will also help your dog learn how to “hold it” until his next potty break.

Make sure your dog is comfortable and compliant with his leash. This helps keep both you and your dog safe when going on walks.

Make sure you are having fun when you are training your dog each day. You can build a strong bond with dog by playing with the dog, and that in turn causes positive reactions during training. Training can be enjoyable, but you should still make time just to play with your pet.

Anxiety causes destructive chewing. Leave your dog safely crated with a tough nylon or hard rubber toy, and he will have something to work on until you come home.

As you know, you must stop the dog from ruining your things via chewing. A well-behaved pet is less likely to injure himself and will also help you avoid the cost and frustration of household repairs. Use the tips here and your training will help the dog to stop chewing.
