Improve Your Dog’s Temperament With These Training Tips

Who doesn't enjoy the joy and company a dog can provide? You may have your hands full when first getting a dog. Your puppy will need lots of training to become a well trained dog. Take a look at the advice presented above, and you can properly train your dog very quickly.

Crates should feel like a safe place to puppies. So, you should never use them as a way to discipline your dog. Dogs may need to be familiarized with the crate to feel comfortable and secure in it. There are many tricks that you can try to make it easier for both of you. Place a treat inside the crate and shut its gate in front of your dog. As soon as they smell the tempting treat, they will want to get into the crate to enjoy it. Once in the crate, let them know they did a good job by praising them.

Make sure to give your puppy plenty of toys that are okay to chew, so that he isn't tempted to chew other things that aren't okay to chew. Offer your puppy a variety of acceptable items to chew on. Chew toys are essential for puppies who are experiencing pain from teething. A great alternative is a frozen wash cloth.

Whenever you want your dog to complete a task, you must reward it. Your dog should realize why you are happy with him. You need to do this because your dog must know what they can and cannot do.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise in addition to scheduled training and potty break sessions. Making sure your dog has enough exercise makes training sessions more effective and encourages regular good behavior from your dog. As they say, a healthy dog will respond well to training.

Training Sessions

Use short training sessions. Since dogs do not have a long attention span, making sure training sessions are kept short ensures that your dog will not dread them. If more training is desired, work in some break times so your dog can play before continuing with training.

Your dog does not need to respond to you saying “no”. Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. When you say ‘no', your dog isn't understanding how it should respond to you. Not all dogs are the same, and their training needs will vary.

To maintain solid behavior, lifelong training is important. Your dog doesn't stop learning just because it's no longer a puppy. Reinforce the positive behaviors, reward your dog for being obedient and punish your dog for its bad behavior.

Use your dog's name often to ensure you have its attention. Do this consistently during the first several weeks to get your dog to pay attention to you. Choose a shorter name that can stand out from other terms.

Alter your tone when speaking to your dog during your training. Giving a command or correcting a negative behavior requires an authoritative tone, while praise can be softer. Stand firm and be sharp when using commands. Use louder tones for corrections, and use your natural tone when giving praise.

Now that you understand how to deal with your puppy, the time has come to apply the above tips. Take time to show him what you expect of him and be patient as he learns. Use the techniques from this article to help your dog become trained.
