Simple Tips For A Well-Trained Canine Companion

Often dogs are adopted by owners who don't fully contemplate owning a pet. Dogs need a commitment from you. You need to do this the right way so you do not have issues later on. Use the tips in the following article to train your dog.

Consider things from your dog's perspective. Sometimes, training will get frustrating, but you will need to have patience. Instead of completely giving up, consider looking at it from their perspective. Your dog may not understand because it hasn't been said enough.

When you buy a crate, ensure it is the correct size. Keep in mind, puppies do not stay small forever. You need a crate that can still fit the puppy once it becomes a dog. The crate should be big enough for the dog to turn and lie down comfortably without feeling cramped.

Avoid training devices which are high end such as shock collars. These devices are expensive and do not always work as well as you would expect them to. They aren't engaging in positive reinforcement either. This kind of approach often ends in disaster.

Pay attention to the length of your dog training sessions. Dogs can only handle a short amount of training at a time, so don't overdo it. Only spend 10 minutes during the first couple of sessions.

Pay Attention

Use your puppy's name often so that he knows to pay attention when you speak. You puppy will develop the association between his name being called, and him needing to pay attention to what you are telling him. Give your dog a relatively short name, preferably one that isn't likely to be confused with other words.

Using a different tone of voice for different purposes is a great teaching tool for training your dog. Use different tones for praise and discipline. Stand firm and be sharp when using commands. Use louder tones for corrections, and use your natural tone when giving praise.

When dogs are anxious or bored, they often engage in inappropriate chewing. If you give the dog a chew toy and put him in the safety of a dog crate, he can occupy himself while you're not at the house.

You can ensure that your dog stays up-to-date with what you've taught him by providing a challenge at regular intervals. Give him a quiz where he has to perform all of his tricks, even if you know for a fact he does.

If you want your dog to be agile, find a breed that is naturally this way. Some breeds are just naturally more agile than others.

Knowing your dog's body language is key to potty training. Lots of dogs follow certain patterns whenever they need to go. When you learn to recognize this behavior pattern and take him outside right away, you will teach him the right way to behave. When you're deeply in touch with your own dog, training goes more easily.

Consistency is key for canine training. You have to use the same words, tone of voice, reward system and do your training in the environment in which the commands will be given normally to ensure the dog picks up what you're trying to teach it.

Even a well-trained family dog who is already a satisfying pet will benefit from the tips presented here. Use these tips and turn your dog into a well-behaved pet.
