Even if you thought the dog you brought home was a perfect angel, it's not uncommon to find some disastrous behavioral problems with a new puppy. You can do just a little training, and you will see that your dog will be a better dog in no time.

Crates should feel like a safe place to puppies. So, you should never use them as a way to discipline your dog. Dogs may need to be familiarized with the crate to feel comfortable and secure in it. There are many tricks that you can try to make it easier for both of you. If they are hesitant about the crate, you can put a nice chew bone inside and shut the gate while they are not in it. This will make the puppy want to be let inside the crate to get the bone. Once they go in the crate, praise them so that they know they did well.

Consistency is very important when you are crate training your puppy. When he comes out of the crate, you must immediately allow him to relieve himself in an appropriate place. As you continue this training, your pet will begin to wait until he gets to the appropriate location to relieve himself.

A number of repetitions will be necessary before your dog will be able to master a new command. It can take as many as 50 repetitions of one command before your dog learns it. Be patient and say the same command in the same way each time. Your dog will learn eventually.

Avoid training devices which are high end such as shock collars. They often do not function properly and their cost is rarely justified. These devices can stifle your dog's natural reactions and have negative effects on even good or acceptable behaviors. This technique can yield negative results.

As you are working to house train your pet, select a single term or phrase that you will use. For example, you could use the phrase, “go potty” when you take them outside to help them remember what to do when you go outside and say the command.

Have a good time while training your dog. When you play with your dog, it strengthens the bond between you and them, thus encouraging the pet to stay positive during training. Although training your dog can be fun, you don't really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Primary reinforcement is an important part of any training program. The dog has a reward they love given when they are good. Use things such as treats or petting your dog to reinforce good behavior. Your dog will learn well from this.

To limit your dog's barking, see if you can acclimate them to whatever triggers their barking. Everything from a sound to a particular person could be a trigger. Once used to these things, your pet will know that barking is not necessary.

A lot of pet owners are pleasantly surprised how canine behavior training can fit seamlessly into their lives and just how soon they can see positive effects. If your dog is getting on your nerves, it's time to put the above tips to use.
