Solid Advice On How To Train Your Dog

If you have never tried to train an animal, the idea may be rather intimidating. There are many different ideas and theories out there, and the sheer amount of information can be overwhelming. These are just some tips to help you start out with canine training the right way.

Spoken directions should be made using a simple, concise and forceful tone. Do not drag on in a rant to your dog about how bad they are. Just say no, then show it what to do instead. Be sure your command tone of voice gets their attention and shows that you're serious.

Repetition is what causes a dog to learn. It's very likely to take many repetitions of one command in order for your pup to fully understand it. Use the command over and over again until the dog gets the hint.

It is very easy to teach a pooch to roll over as long as you have some tasty treats on hand. Begin by getting the dog to lay down. Next, hold a treat near the floor on one side of his head, slowly bring the treat up and over the dogs head to the other side. As the dog uses his nose to track the morsel, he will simultaneously roll his entire body over. As he rolls, state the command “roll over” in a firm tone. Repeat the process until your dog associates the command with the action. Do not let a lack of early success frustrate you. This takes repetition to nail down, but once you do, you will have the star dog on the block.

To house train your dog, you should make sure that your dog follows a regular feeding and elimination schedule. This gives you important forehand knowledge to prevent accidents and your dog an association of cause and effect to follow. A schedule will train your dog to know when he will get to go out next.

Be careful not to spend too much time at once training your dog. If you spend a lot of time on only one thing, your dog can get bored and frustrated. Try limiting training sessions to 10 minutes or less.

When training your dog make sure you always get his attention in the same manner. Start each command by calling the dog's name. Get their attention and then follow up with whatever you want them to do. This will get their attention quick and aid your training routine.

Avoiding accidents entirely is the best way to toilet train a dog. Pay attention for signs that your dog needs to go outside. Pacing, sniffing and whining are common signs. Don't hesitate to take your dog out whenever you notice your dog behaving in one of these ways. Immediately pick up the leash and go outside to a preferred spot. When he does go, praise him! Over time, he will be able to signal to you his need to relieve himself.

To limit your dog's barking, see if you can acclimate them to whatever triggers their barking. It might be something they hear or being exposed to people. Your goal is to show your pet that barking is not an appropriate response to these common stimuli.
