Lots of dogs go to shelters simply because their owners become disappointed in them, though this does not need to be the case. Proper training will produce a good well-behaved family dog. A great dog can be yours; just read on.

Set a schedule and routine for feeding your dog from the very beginning of your relationship. Develop a feeding schedule, and be consistent with the routines so you can teach your dog what to expect and how to behave. Soon, your pet will finish the meal before you're ready to remove its dish.

Dogs tend to concentrate on one thing to the exclusion of everything else unless that concentration is interrupted. If you keep up with his training, your dog will look to you more often for direction rather than looking to the environment.

Have verbal cues so that your pet will know exactly when they complete a command correctly. The word “yes” can be the bridge between rewards and good behavior.

When it's time to introduce house training to your dog, put him on a consistent schedule of eating and elimination. This will help you better understand when your dog needs to go outside, so he doesn't go on the carpet and ruin it. A schedule will train your dog to know when he will get to go out next.

Use various tones of voice when training your dog. Each type of command should use a different type of tone. The best advice is to use a firm voice for commands, a louder voice when correcting your dog and a higher voice when praising your dog.

If you are consistent, your puppy can learn to “hold it.” If at home, be sure to spend some time with him and bring him outside every 50 minutes. If you dog uses the bathroom outside, praise him. Never yell at your dog for relieving itself in the house. Yelling does not teach, and the dog won't understand why you're upset. Instead, give the pet every chance to succeed by taking it outside as soon as you remove it from the crate and roughly 15 minutes after it eats or drinks.

As you see from reading this, having a dog that is in a good mood is all together possible. It is imperative that you give your pet a lot of your time and attention. Use the tips above to turn your dog into a member of the family.
