Training your dog well will lead to happiness for the both of you. Your dog will be more predictable when he is trained in the right way. Training your dog makes life less stressful as you will be able to leave him alone and know he will behave well with visitors or in public. Even though training a dog is not an easy task, the time you take with it to teach manners, tricks, and how to do things properly will be time that is well spent.
Make sure that you use a gradual process when training your dog. Start with a quick session initially, adding time with successive training periods. When your dog loses interest, quit for the day.
When crate training a young puppy you must be consistent. When letting a puppy out of a crate, you need to let them relieve themselves immediately. Over time, the puppy will learn to wait until he is in this location.
Before your dog can learn a new command it will take several repetitions. It may take 25-50 tries before your dog understands a command consistently and thoroughly. Being patient while trying the same task or command will allow your dog to understand it.
When house-breaking your puppy, choose a specific phrase to use when it's time to go outdoors. For example, you could use the phrase, “go potty” when you take them outside to help them remember what to do when you go outside and say the command.
Start small when you begin to work on training your dog to give your dog an easy start. This will be great for immediate gratification, and your dog will begin to understand what you expect along the way. This will give you much better results while training.
Keep your sessions short to accommodate a short attention span. If you spend too much time doing one training exercise, your dog will become bored. Keep first training lessons to 10 minutes or less.
Use the same command for the behavior you want him to demonstrate. Always start your commands with his name. Use his name to get his attention then follow up with a command. Your dog will notice their name and they will see that you want their attention.
To limit your dog's barking, see if you can acclimate them to whatever triggers their barking. Maybe it's a specific sound, or perhaps it's being near other people or certain animals. Eventually, your dog should see that barking is not necessary in this situation.
Ground Rules
Every relationship has ground rules, and the act of training your dog establishes those ground rules with your dog. This makes it less likely that you and your dog will have issues later. Always keep to the routine and reinforce every rule you have established. Keep his memory crisp, and do not let any deviations from acceptable behavior slide through. Once your dog has the basics of training under his belt, there is no limit to what the two of you can achieve.
