Dogs of all sizes generally have the same mindset. Someone with a good grasp of these universal doggy traits should be able to successfully train almost any sort of dog. Luckily, if a person does not yet understand this particular state of mind, they can read the tips below and learn the ropes.
Commands and corrections should be short and straight to the point. Don't rant on to the dog about the thinks that he did wrong. Just say no and direct them on what it is you desire for them to do. Also make sure that the volume of your voice commands their attention and lets them know that you mean business.
Never chain two dogs too close to each other. One dog's chain might become entangled with the other, which could lead to serious injuries. Particularly in the case of a large dog and a small dog, the animals may get so tangled that the smaller dog has his airway cut off and dies.
Your dog must realize that you are the leader of the pack. You must command your dog's respect by being able to maintain discipline, or his obedience will be out of the question. Avoid allowing your dog to lead you during walks. Instead, walk in front of your dog to show that you are the leader of this pack.
It is easy to train a roll with treats. First, make sure the dog is in a laying position. Then, hold the treat over your dog's head and swipe it above and around his head, causing him to roll over. He will naturally use his nose to follow the treat, thus rolling over his whole body. While rolling, use your vocal command. It may take a while to get to this point, but you will be pleased if you stick with it. It's an impressive trick.
It is important to avoid dwelling on one task for too long. If you spend too much time doing one training exercise, your dog will become bored. Aim for less than 10 minutes per session.
If your dog jumps when you don't want him to, gently squeeze his paws. This will not hurt your dog if done lightly, but it will impart the information that jumping up is not appropriate. Since it is so uncomfortable, they'll avoid jumping on people.
