Training Your Dog Advice That All Dog Owners Should Read

There is nothing wrong with being unsure of how to properly train your dog. Few people other than professionals actually do know. Researching training your dog was the first step in the right direction. This article contains good guidelines for several different aspects of puppy training.

You can try a little bit of ingenuity if you are going with crate training for your indoor dog or puppy. To entice a hesitant puppy into the crate, give it the incentive of a toy or bone inside, with the door shut. They will see and smell the bone and will want you to let them in there to get it. Open the door, and praise them when they go inside.

Ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise and stimulation. Dogs become bored very easily. When dogs are bored they are difficult to train. Your dog needs proper exercise to function to his highest potential. A long walk or a brisk run are great ways to get rid of some of your dog's excess energy.

When you approach a strange dog, make sure you approach him slowly and allow the dog to sniff your hand. This gives the dog the opportunity to recognize your scent and start to trust you. After the dog knows your scent, he is unlikely to fear you and may be more willing to heed your command.

Training your dog requires you to be firm and authoritative. However, this doesn't mean constantly yelling at your dog. Instead, find some balance between being firm and being loving. Doing so improves the relationship between you two.

To reduce your dog's barking, try to understand what is causing it. Some dogs bark in response to a specific sound, whereas others become excited in the presence of other people or dogs. As you begin getting your dog accustomed to these situations, he will be less likely to bark.

Don't give a puppy too much information and training at once, or you'll wear him out. A puppy's attention span is short and their energy is limited, so your sessions should be short and positive. Your puppy will happier with the experience, and less resistant to your future efforts. He will be looking forward to them instead.

Alter your tone when speaking to your dog during your training. Commands, corrections and praise should all have their own tone in order to help your dog distinguish cause and effect with his and your behavior. Commands should be clearly stated in a firm tone. Corrections and reprimands must be spoken more firmly, while praise should be delivered in a natural tone.

Leave the leash somewhat loose during training. When a dog gets the chance to explore new sights, sounds and smells on a walk, he often becomes very excitable. Your dog might pull on their leash. The smart owner discourages this behavior, teaching the dog to walk with a slack leash instead.

Now that you've found the information you needed, use it to train your dog. Having an understanding on how to go about training your dog will help you get started.
